Wilmington Island Methodist Church Charge Conference

Sunday, November 9, 2025, at 5:25 pm

What is a Charge?

A pastoral Charge is a church that is organized under and subject to the Book of Doctrines and Discipline (BODD) of the Global Methodist Church (GMC).  The term charge originated with John Wesley, who appointed preachers to societies or circuits, giving them a "charge,” a responsibility for the spiritual and administrative oversight of that group.  The name has remained since.

What is a Charge Conference?

The Charge Conference meets at least annually and serves as the connecting link between the local church, the annual conference, and the general church.  It has general oversight of the church council and the overall ministry of the local church.

What happens at Charge Conference?

During the annual meeting, in alignment with the GMC’s objectives, the Charge Conference:

  • Reviews and evaluates the church’s mission and ministry

  • Receives reports from church leaders

  • Elects new leaders

  • Adopts objectives and goals recommended by the church council

  • Conducts other business such as recommending candidates for ordained ministry, setting the compensation of the appointed clergy, and updating the membership rolls.

Who may attend?

All members of the church council who are professing members of the GMC, together with retired ordained ministers and retired diaconal ministers who elect to hold their membership in this charge and any others as may be designated in the BOD. To encourage broader participation, in accordance with Article VII.438.9 of the BODD, the Charge Conference at WIMC is convened as a church conference, allowing all professing members of the local church present to vote.

All WIMC professing members are invited and encouraged to attend Charge Conference on Nov 9 at 5:15 pm!
