About Our Pastor
Pastor Rob Grotheer was born and raised in Savannah. He attended Isle of Hope UMC and worked at his parent's grocery store in Sandfly. He attended Hesse Elementary, Bartlett Junior High, Jenkins High School and graduated from Savannah Christian in 1974.
Rob's first church job was as a college freshman at Armstrong serving as youth director at Isle of Hope UMC. It was during this time God planted a seed of ministry that grew through the years.
In 1978 Rob transferred to Flagler College in St. Augustine with the intentions of working on staff of Young Life.
While there he met a deaf education major, Gayle. They married in 1980.
Following graduation Rob responded to a call to join the staff at First UMC Albany and was there until 1986. While in Albany he commuted to Emory and earned his Master of Divinity.
A new invitation came to step out on faith and be in ministry with students at the thirteen thousand member, First UMC of Houston, Texas. It was there two sons, Josh and Jacob, were born. Gayle also made time to earn her masters in counseling from the University of Houston.
The pull of family and south Georgia brought Rob and Gayle to staff position on St. Simons Island, Wesley at Frederica UMC in 1993.
A final call to return to his home church of Isle of Hope UMC came in 1998 to serve on the clergy staff. Eleven years later Rob was appointed as Pastor to College Place UMC in 2009.
Gayle is recently retired from the State school system as school counselor.
We see it as a privilege and an honor to serve the people of Wilmington Island as your new pastoral family.
